Studio
HGA (Hayashi – Grossschmidt Arhitektuur) was born in 2004, out of Coo Arhitektid which was an active young architects’ platform during 1999-2003.
Partners are Hanno Grossschmidt from Estonia and Tomomi Hayashi from Japan whose successful partnership was recognised and awarded with Young Architect Prize in 2010.
The range of projects diverses from temporary installations to urban plannings, which have been noted locally as well as internationally through exhibitions and publications.
Major awards include Estonian Culture Endowment Architectural Prizes in 2003 (Lasnamäe Track and Field Center/ Lasnamäe Kergejõustikuhall) and in 2009 (Rotermann Old and New Flour Storage/ Rotermanni Vana ja Uus Jahuladu). The same project were nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award in 2005 and 2009.
The practice has participated in creation of the recently-completed Estonian National Museum as a local architect.

Office Philosophy
Our office functions as a creative design team exploring architectural interactions in practical, contextual, and materialistic manner through collaborative relationships with clients, builders, engineers, designers, as well as users in large context.
We consider architecture as a part of scene/landscape which interacts with the surrounding environments through its tolerant potential. We try to make the building commuinicative by articulation of its volumes, materials and building programmes. The building is to be functional, though not tightly but loosely to suggest or support everyday life of users and the public.
Through architecture we can enliven, strengthen and also heal the environment of and around the site. This is basics of architecture as a tool of placemaking.
