New Tallinna Kaubamaja (Tallinn Department Store)

The central challenge was to transform a block-sized volume into a pleasant urban environment and integrate it into the fabric of Tallinn’s city centre.

The main entrance has been relocated to Rävala Boulevard, creating a representative multifunctional vestibule with access from three directions. Inside, diagonal and vertical atriums provide orientation and connectivity, while offering spaces for cafés, pop-up shops, and events.

Toward the city, the design features an active street front with large glass façades and a continuous canopy that softens the scale of the building while enriching public space. Landscaped terraces on the upper levels add value for both users and the surrounding urban views.

The facade combines timeless dolomite, warm wood, and open glass surfaces. Vertical articulation references modernist landmarks of Tallinn, while diagonal lines add dynamism and subtle national motifs. The result is a building that respects heritage while offering a contemporary, open, and human-centred urban experience.
