Paper Library - three 'layers of time'

As part of the Riga European Capital of Culture program in 2014, the 'Paper Object Festival' was held in the Kalnciema wooden house district. The curator's goal was to showcase the versatility of paper in public space design and to draw attention to the area's unique wooden houses.

On the very first visit, the small Zvirbulisi (latvian for 'sparrow') library was noticeable. The single-story silicate brick building, whose solitude and graffiti-covered facade suggested neglect, seemed like an ideal place for an architectural revival.

The installation addresses three 'layers of time': wood, brick, and paper. In 1880, the building was constructed as a summer house; in the 1960s, it was reconstructed into a library and covered with silicate brick – a widely used material at the time. Paper, with its crisp white folds and edges, added a new, contemporary layer.

The installation emphasized the building's inner content – books – and highlighted both its location and function. The goal was to draw attention to the library's role in the community and the need to preserve and value it.

Double-layered 4 mm white cardboard panels were folded and attached to the building's facade with wooden slats. A total of 260 modules were installed. The installation was open from June 27 to July 20, 2014, as part of the festival.
