Merimetsa Promenade in the Hipodroomi Quarter
Merimetsa Promenade in the Hipodroomi Quarter

The concept design 'Cape of Good Hope' is a new public space that connects the city and nature, drawing inspiration from the former Hippodrome. The promenade will become the area's main meeting place and activity center, offering opportunities for both relaxation and active leisure.

Spatial Solution:

The promenade follows the contour of the historic harness racing track, which is marked by pavements, steps, and small architectural forms. The space is divided into different zones:

– an urban business area along Paldiski road,

– a central part with a market and activities,

– a nature-oriented park area in the northern part around the pond.

The pace of movement changes from zone to zone – fast and open in the urban part, slower and calmer in the natural part.

Landscaping:

Continuous oak alleys, fruit trees, ornamental grasses, and meadow communities. The pond collects rainwater and supports natural biodiversity.

Materials and Small Forms:

Varied paving articulates the space and directs movement. Motifs from horse racing are also represented: obstacle courses, gazebos, a gate pavilion, and a clock tower.
