Installation „To the sea! “

Completed in parallel with the 1980 Olympic Games, the Linnahall was the first and only place in Soviet-era Tallinn from where an ordinary citizen could walk from the city center to the sea. Before that, the entire port area was a strictly restricted and guarded military and industrial zone, where access was forbidden to ordinary citizens. The seaside was not part of the everyday urban experience but belonged to closed territories.

Linnahall's architects, Raine Karp and Riina Altmäe, designed this new access point with special sensitivity – the building's low, gentle, and landscape-like form allowed views of the Old Town from Tallinn Bay to be preserved, acting as a green bastion growing out of the landscape. However, an unrealized architectural vision, poor construction quality, and complex functional solutions have led to Linnahall being neglected today, awaiting new investments and meanings. At the same time, its roof and stairs – especially in warm weather – remain popular places to spend time, where the boundaries between the sea and the city temporarily blur.

The installation was based on Linnahall's unique location and architectural concept, amplifying the feeling of moving directly from the Old Town to the sea. By adding temporary viewing platforms, it emphasized the interrupted desire to move forward – towards the horizon and freedom. Addressing universal aspirations and relating to the European Capital of Culture's message of (re)opening Tallinn to the sea, the installation entered into a dialogue with Linnahall's recent past, present, and future.

The installation was open from July 15 to October 10, 2011.
