The former industrial area between the Tallinn bus station and the Fahle quarter is becoming an active part of the city center. In our competition entry, we focused on creating a clear and understandable urban structure to open up the previously closed-off quarter to its surroundings and connect it with the daily urban space and people's movements.
In the heart of the quarter, we designed two distinct courtyards: an active one and a tranquil one, with a diagonal walkway featuring a rain garden running between them. The rain garden helps manage stormwater and creates a connection to the former location of the Härjapea River.
The development is based on spatial diversity: the building sections vary in terms of their number of stories, typology, roof shape, and facade materials, which offers a multi-layered and nuanced spatial experience.
